As gas heating systems became the norm in the latter half of the 20th century, so many homeowners covered over their solid fuel fire and installed gas fires, yet when all is said and done, something was lost in terms of character as a result. Unless it’s Tweets or Facebook posts, kids just don’t do a lot of reading these days. Why should they, when they can entertain themselves with social media sites, games consoles and mobile phones, all of which require less effort than the old fashioned book?

One of the first things you notice when you walk into a household is the floor. It’s literally all over the place, and you can’t really get anywhere without walking on it. It also takes up a very large area, as it is the base as well as the foundation.

When I think about how vastly different things were when my grandparents were children as opposed to today’s kids, it’s mind boggling. For example, grams and gramps didn’t even have a television let alone a computer, smartphone or other handheld electronic device. Nowadays, it’s more common to see a child with a cell phone rather than a toy or a book. (more…)
