Sometimes, escaping the capital after a hard day of work is the best way of keeping up a good quality of life. Living in London most definitely has its advantages, from being close to some of the world’s most iconic architecture, to seeing incredible concerts and immersing yourself in the ‘pop-up’ culture that has become so popular in East London.
However, when it comes to raising a family – the best option is thought to be living outside of the city, away from the hustle and bustle.
So, here are some family hot spots, without causing you to endure a killer commute every morning.
With the swathes of new homes in Hertfordshire it’s plain to see why families with London careers are moving here in their droves. It is host to a selection of beautiful Roman, medieval and Victorian buildings with an abundance of top state schools, along with a rise in independent schools that are receiving top results.
Much of Hertfordshire is popular for the picturesque village vibe. It also contains a local train station which takes just 38 minutes to get to Liverpool Street station. Harpenden is another great example and is full of activities for the whole family to enjoy – from amateur dramatic societies to cricket clubs.
Parts of Essex are ideal locations to raise a family in, whilst enjoying a short 30 minute commute to central London. Chelmsford is one of the favourite locations to bring up a family in terms of fantastic schools and a real community spirit, whilst enjoying large expanses of grass with Hylands Park.
Audley End is another fantastic location, famed for the Audley End House and Garden which attracts visitors from far and wide year after year.
Some people are a little put off by a longer commute time, but for those that aren’t: Norfolk is a great county for finding cheaper properties whilst also enjoying a good quality of life.
Towns such as Diss are undeniably quaint, with a few great schools and a commute that takes around 60-90 minutes. For something a little more lively, be sure to check out Norwich, the county’s only city which is home to the famous Norwich castle – perfect for family days out.
